Calder Valley Voices in Whitby at the 2009 Street Choirs Festival

Nearly 30 of us went to Whitby at the beginning of July, to join in the 27th National Street Choir Festival.

It was a wonderful weekend and we were in good voice. We busked around the town and sang on the beach.

At the Saturday concert we sang two pieces: “Joy of Living” and “Dominion”. Ewan MacColl wrote “Joy of Living” in the 1980s, near the end of his life. We sang an arrangement for 4 voices by Peter Amidon, published in 2007. “Dominion” is a rousing shape-note piece, praising the wonders of the natural world, first published in 1699.

Here’s what some people said about the weekend and about our singing:

“You were Wonderful! both busking but especially the concert and most especially 'Joy of Living' - I hope you received some of the glowing feedback from the audience which was all around.”
Helen (our MD)

“I heard your performance at Whitby folk festival of the song by Ewan MacColl - it brought myself, and other members of Red Leicester Choir to tears.”
Christina (Red Leicester Choir Member)

Just a short e-mail to congratulate you on quite the most moving version I have heard of "The Joy of Living" ... it was wonderful to hear what I regard as the most profound of all [Ewan MacColl's] songs given such a sensitive treatment.
Ian (Caedmon Choir Member)
